Description of The Lovers
The Lovers card depicts a scene with the sun shining at it's apex above a larger-than-life winged figure funneling his influence down to the earth. Below, stands a man and a women; they are both naked and don't seem to mind at all, resembling Adam and his wife Eve in the Garden of Eden. The Tree of Life stands tall behind the man in full bloom bearing twelve fruits. Likewise, behind the woman, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, the subtle serpent roundabout it whispering subtly into her ear:
"Did God really say: You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?"
The man and woman suggest youth, virginity, naivety, innocence and love prior to defilement by material desire. In it's most simplistic sense, The Lovers represents human love.
An interesting correspondence exists here between the man and woman shown inThe Devil
.
